Do hyaluronic acid Gels work for Knee Arthritis?

Updated: Aug 13, 2022

Orthovisc is a thick or viscous solution of high molecular weight, highly purified sodium hyaluronate in physiological saline. Hyaluronan, which is found in the human body, lubricates the joints and acts as a shock absorber. With osteoarthritis, natural hyaluronan is compromised. Orthovisc is one of the hyaluronates used in a procedure known as viscosupplementation. Orthovisc is a non-animal sourced viscosupplement that is injected directly into the knee joint to restore the cushioning and lubricating properties of the normal joint fluid (i.e., synovial fluid).

At INLIVEN MEDICAL, We have a range of different HA gels from Orthovisc, Hyalgan, Go-On gels to cater to different grades of OA knees.

Each injection costs @ $450nett. Patients are advised to get at least 3 injections 2 weeks apart to assess the efficacy.

From our experience, Patients who have grade 1 to 3 arthritis do gain significant pain relief with this form of therapy. Of course, this is coupled on a background of appropriate exercises and arthritic bracing for the knees.
